What is it?
The Tonto is a hospital waste shredder, which is designed to be the entry point of all healthcare wastes at the different wards of the hospital. The shredded content travels through the existing sewage to the Pharmafilter waste treatment plant.
The Tonto is Portuguese for ‘simpleton’, representing the simplicity of the usage.

Here, I will highlight my responsibilities in this project and give some examples of the designed components.
My main responsibilities included:
The design of components for light, water, air and mixing modules based on insights gathered from experts, past designs and usage testing.
The select and contact of suppliers for rotation moulding and thermoforming and worked with these suppliers to optimize design for manufacturability.
Ensured prototypes made in sheet metal correspond with the plastic versions of the final design.
